Weaver Wood as Tom Petty

What an incredibly sad day. We lost an American icon… Charlie T. Wilbury, Jr., also known as Elroy “Lucky” Kleinschmidt from King of the Hill,… but forever stamped in the hallowed halls of rock and roll as Tom Petty.

I was lucky enough to catch Tom in concert with Bob Dylan many years ago. It was an amazing show… cementing for me the genius of Tom Petty. Tom had the audience eating out of the palm of his hand. All the while, Tom was enjoying himself more than the audience… if that could be possible. I left that show knowing that Tom would forever be one of the great musicians and showmen of my generation.

Upon hearing of Tom’s heart attack, I decided to pay tribute to our fallen hero with a mashup. I chose Weaver because he has the perfect facial structure for Petty’s narrow face. Plus Weaver just nails every parody he attempts and this one needs to be perfect.

Any of you who followed my comic strip Just Say Cheese knows how much I admired Tom’s music. The fictitious parody rock band, the Okra Pods, from my strip made a parody song of Tom’s on nearly every one of their 72 albums. I even wrote once that Derick Hamm was once asked why they parodied so many songs. His response was, “Tom never sues us”. The honest truth was that I just loved his songs and making parodies of his music was my way of expressing my enjoyment of his amazing talent.

So here is one of the parodies I wrote back in 2007. This is from the parody album Unraveling Hillbillies featuring an amazing track list of Wilburys parodies. This is a parody of Tom Petty’s American Girl.

Well, she was just a’ baking a squirrel.
Glazed with caramel.
She stopped all the stinking in there
With a little of the spice
From the shelf.

After all it was a great big squirrel
Which made it kind of hard not to run into.
Yeah, and it popped her tire
On her jeep
But she raced it home
So it would keep.

Oh Yeah. All right.
Tastes real greasy baby.
Yet kinda tough to bite.
She was a’baking a squirrel.

It was just not tasting quite right.
Kind of like old and nasty balony.
She was hearing all the cars nearby
And wonder if she’s heard a hit and run
When she would hear the tires screach!

So she had to go and see what’s there.
She jumped into her SUV.
Hope it is still cool.
Something that’s not squished.
And still fresh and does not reak.

Oh Yeah. All right.
