Charmy’s Army, the Comic Strip — Defective Detectives — Chapter 4: Beyond the Natural: Ruling Out the Supernatural and the Rapture

In this week’s comic strip, the Candy Bar investigation takes a sharp leap into existential philosophy. When the bartender asks what the detectives have actually discovered about Doc’s disappearance, Charmy dramatically clarifies that they don’t know if he disappeared—they just know he is missing! Pushing the investigation to extremes, Charmy solemnly reveals that they haven’t ruled out magic or voodoo. When the bartender sarcastically asks if they’ve ruled out the Rapture, Frenchy panics and urgently orders Weaver to call Father McGee: if he picks up, they can officially cross the Rapture off their list!

The afternoon shadows stretched across the floorboards of The Candy Bar like dark fingers, heightening the eerie atmosphere Charmy was desperately trying to cultivate. Outside, Fort Hill was as peaceful as ever—the sound of distant bugle calls and rhythmic marching drills drifted on the breeze. But inside, the investigative brain trust was wrestling with forces far beyond simple military regulations.

Charmy leaned both elbows against the counter, his trench coat bunched around his shoulders, his face a mask of brooding intensity. “You see, normal detectives look for footprints, broken latches, maybe a dropped pocket watch. But normal detectives don’t understand the cosmic complexity of Doc’s existence.”

The bartender wiped a damp rag across the varnished wood, shaking her head. “So what you’re telling me, in plain English, is that you’ve been interrogating candy patrons for three hours and you still haven’t found a single clue.”

“A clue is an illusion created by the culprit to mislead the uninitiated!” Weaver chimed in, attempting to sound profoundly intellectual despite his oversized fedora slipping down over his right eye. “The absence of evidence is itself evidence of a master criminal at work!”

Frenchy leaned forward, her silver head mirror catching the dim lighting. “Or a wizard!”

“Precisely!” Charmy declared, pointing dramatically at the ceiling. “We cannot afford to think like ordinary infantry ants! Fort Hill sits at the intersection of strange currents. Who among us can definitively state that Doc wasn’t spirited away by an ancient curse? Or transformed into a thimble by a disgruntled practitioner of voodoo who didn’t like his bedside manner?”

The bartender stared at him deadpan, holding the rag mid-wipe. She let out a dry, exasperated chuckle. “Right. Magic and voodoo. Very thorough. And tell me, detective… have you ruled out the Rapture?”

The bar went dead silent.

Charmy froze, his antennae standing straight up in alarm. Weaver gasped, clutching the lapels of his coat as if preparing for sudden ascension. Flimp hopped up and down on his stool, screeching with escalating panic, waving his hairy little arms toward the heavens.

“The Rapture?!” Frenchy shrieked, her eyes expanding to the size of saucers. Her hands flew to her cheeks in sheer terror. “Doc was taken straight to glory?! But he didn’t even get to finish his cafeteria pudding!”

“Quick!” Frenchy shouted, grabbing Weaver by the shoulders and shaking him with surprising strength. “Call Father McGee! Get him on the horn right now! If the Father answers the rectory phone, we know the faithful are still on Earth! If he doesn’t answer, we have missed the boat, boys! We’ve been left behind with the unpaid bar tabs and the Monday morning drills!”

Weaver frantically fumbled inside his trench coat pockets, pulling out a tangled mess of string, two paper clips, a half-eaten lollipop, and finally his military-issue field communicator. His fingers trembled as he dialed the base chapel. “What’s the extension?! Does anyone remember the rectory extension?!”

“Dial seven! Dial nine! Dial everything!” Frenchy cried, hopping from one foot to the other.

“Wait, wait, calm down!” Charmy yelled, trying to impose order on the unraveling hysteria. “Think logically! Would Doc be taken in the first wave? Let’s be completely honest with ourselves. He reuses tongue depressors if they look mostly clean. He charged Sarge fifteen cents for a complimentary band-aid last Christmas. If the trumpet sounds, Doc is going to be waiting in the standby line with the rest of us!”

Weaver paused with the phone pressed to his ear, his antennae vibrating with tension. “It’s ringing… It’s ringing… someone’s picking up…”

A deep, scratchy voice came over the receiver: “Saint Jude’s Chapel, Father McGee speaking, peace be upon you.”

Weaver slammed the receiver down onto the cradle, panting heavily as sweat beaded on his forehead. “He answered! He’s there!”

Frenchy let out a massive sigh of relief, collapsing against the bar counter and fanning herself with her Etsy diploma. “Thank goodness. That’s one less metaphysical crisis to worry about. We can officially cross the divine assumption of Doc off the suspect board.”

“See?” Charmy straightened his fedora, smoothing his coat with unshakeable smugness. “That is the power of deduction. Methodical, systematic elimination of variables. We have eliminated spontaneous trans-dimensional teleportation, and we have eliminated the celestial harvest. That leaves us with the only logical conclusion.”

The bartender crossed her arms, thoroughly amused despite herself. “Which is?”

“Human—or rather, ant—agency,” Charmy stated coldly. “Doc didn’t vanish into the heavens. Someone walked into camp and took him. And I know just where to find our prime suspect.”
