Happy Birthday George Harrison

I am a huge fan of The Beatles, that is not a secret. To me, there is no other band that can ever touch their legacy. I first discovered them when I was 7 years old. I had a stack of 45 RPMs, look it up kids, and one of the records were by The Beatles. The rest included the Everly Brothers, a few Elvis records, Stevie Wonder, and a host of 50’s recordings.

The single from The Beatles was “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”/”I Saw Her Standing There”. I was blown away. I was seven, and the song rattled my core. I remember playing it over and over…. and begging my mom over and over again for an album. She eventually caved.

The first album was “At The Hollywood Bowl”. We stopped at my Grandfather’s house on the way home. He has one of those “entertainment center” cabinet monstrosities that looked like a hunk of furniture. Oh, the golden yellow speakers and chestnut wooden finish. I can still smell the pledge used to keep that lustrous shine shimmering.

The album began and I was mesmerized. I think I heard three songs before they had enough. The Beatles was not their taste in music. I remember the rest of the visit being the longest two hours of my life. I had my first Beatles album and times drug.

Fast forward to my third record. I was at a garage sale in Dickinson looking through a ton of albums and there it was. I found “All Things Must Pass”, George Harrison’s first solo album. I paid a whopping 75 cents. I was a kid in the seventies so that was expensive.

I can still recall the moment I sat down at my tine, portable phonograph table, dropping that needle ever so carefully, hearing the cracking as the opening track gentle glided through my ears with that emotional guitar taking me to a realm I had never ventured. “I’d Have You Anytime” still takes me to this magic place every time I hear that awesome song.

To this day, the “All Things Must Pass” album is my favorite album ever. To this day, George is still my favorite Beatle. To me, George was the most creative songwriter out of the four. Sure, Paul has some of the biggest hits of all time and has written a ton of songs that are deep and magical, but George’s songs have touched me deeper with their spirituality. George’s songs are braver, bolder and more real than Paul’s works.

The drawing above is my character Blue portraying George Harrison. Later in the year, I will finish the card series with the four stages of The Beatles… Mop Top era, Revolver era, and Hippie Let It Be era. One would think a band from the 60’s would fade away by now but these prints sell very well at my appearances.

Happy birthday George. We miss you ever so much.
