キャンディ・ケインは

「ザ・キャンディ・バー」の心を支える存在

キャンディ・ケインは、チャーミーズ、フレンチー、ウィーバー、そしてフリンプたちの行きつけのカフェ「ザ・キャンディ・バー」の、頼もしくも温かい心を持ったオーナーです。彼女は切れ味鋭いウィーット、毅然とした態度、そして聖人のような忍耐力を兼ね備えており、それらの資質は騒がしい常連客たちをあしらう際に大いに役立っています。彼らのおバカな行動にあきれ顔を見せることもありますが、内心では彼らがお店にもたらす賑やかなカオスを楽しんでいるのです。

キャンディと「ザ・キャンディ・バー」の結びつきは、単なるビジネス以上の深いものです。戦争の英雄だった彼女の亡き夫は、いつか退役して彼女の名前にちなんだカフェを開くことをずっと夢見ていました。彼が海外の戦場で命を落としたとき、キャンディは保険金を使って建物を買い取り、彼の夢を現実のものとしました。彼女がそのことを口にすることは滅多にありませんが、夫の思い出は店のあらゆる場所に織り込まれています。彼が愛したメニュー、レジの近くにそっと飾られたフレーム写真、そして揺るぎない決意で店を切り盛りし続ける姿勢を通して、キャンディは自分なりのやり方で静かに彼の遺志を尊重しているのです。

タフで自立した女性に見えるキャンディですが、自分の店を大切にしてくれる人には特に優しい一面を持っています。筋の通らない勝手な振る舞いは許しませんが、心の底ではお客さんたち——そう、チャーミーズのことでさえも深く気遣っています。彼女の淹れるコーヒーは濃く、その態度はさらに強力で、もし彼女を怒らせたら「お引き取り」と書かれたカップを差し出されることになるでしょう。

キャンディにとって「ザ・キャンディ・バー」は単なるお店ではなく、「我が家」なのです。そして（トラブルを起こさずに）ドアをくぐる者は誰もが家族同然。もちろん、チャーミーズとその仲間たちは軍人ということもあり、キャンディは彼らや彼らの店内で繰り広げられる破天荒な奇行に対して、特別な寛容さをもって接しているのでした。

Blue Jean Riptonhaff

The Conspiracy Theorist Extraordinaire

Blue is Charmy’s Army’s resident conspiracy theorist, and if you ask him, he’s the only person on Earth who really knows what’s going on. Whether it’s secret government experiments, aliens living among us, or squirrels being trained as spies, Blue is absolutely convinced that the truth is out there—and that he’s the only one brave enough to expose it.

Nobody knows exactly how Blue came to be the way he is, but somewhere along the line, he fell deep into the world of wild theories and never found his way back out. He’s the kind of guy who carries around a notebook filled with “evidence” that connects unrelated events in the most ridiculous ways possible. If you give him five minutes, he’ll explain how coffee shops are actually secret information hubs for interdimensional beings—or why the moon landing was staged by a group of talking raccoons.

Despite his eccentricities, Blue is oddly likable. His paranoia might be exhausting, but his enthusiasm is contagious, and even his skeptics can’t help but be entertained by his elaborate theories. His endless rants often leave The Candy Bar patrons shaking their heads, but at least he keeps things interesting.

While most of his ideas are nonsense, there’s always a small chance that, just maybe, he’s stumbled onto something real. And that’s the scariest part.

Gerald “Sarge” Gaffer

The Long-Suffering Leader

Sarge is the commanding officer at the military base where Charmy, Frenchy, Weaver, Flimp, and Turtle reside. A battle-hardened veteran with a face that looks like it was permanently sculpted into a scowl, Sarge runs the base with strict discipline—or at least, he tries to. In reality, he spends most of his time dealing with the endless chaos caused by his less-than-competent troops.

A no-nonsense leader with a short fuse, Sarge doesn’t tolerate foolishness—unfortunately for him, foolishness seems to follow his soldiers everywhere they go. Whether it’s Weaver inventing something ridiculous, Flimp sleepwalking into disaster, or Charmy cracking wise when he should be following orders, Sarge constantly finds himself shouting until he’s red in the face.

Despite his gruff and intimidating demeanor, deep down, Sarge has a begrudging respect for his troops. He would never admit it, of course, but he knows that beneath all the absurdity, they’re a loyal bunch. Even when Charmy is driving him up the wall, or Frenchy is turning a simple task into a full-blown catastrophe, Sarge does his best to keep them all in line—though it’s a losing battle most days.

If Sarge had it his way, he’d be leading a squad of disciplined, respectable soldiers. Instead, he got Charmy’s Army. And he’s pretty sure it’s going to give him a heart attack.

Eugene “Turtle” Wetting

The Awkward Underdog with a Big Heart

Turtle, whose real name is Eugene Wetting, is a lovable but socially awkward member of Charmy’s Army. As a kid, he was teased relentlessly because of his name, often called “Gene” Wetting by bullies. So when Charmy nicknamed him “Turtle,” he gladly embraced the new identity and never looked back.

Growing up, Turtle had only two friends, and both went to a different high school, leaving him to spend most of his evenings buried in comic books and video games. Socially, he was an outcast, struggling to connect with others outside of his fictional worlds. After high school, he decided to join the army, hoping it would “make a man out of him” like people said it would.

On the bus ride to Fort Hill, he met Frenchy French, and for the first time in his life, a girl actually talked to him. Frenchy, being a nervous wreck, would have talked to anyone sitting next to her, but to Turtle, it was a life-changing experience. That moment of kindness cemented his deep, unspoken crush on her—one he still carries to this day.

Turtle is sweet, nerdy, and a little clueless when it comes to social cues, but he’s also fiercely loyal to his friends. He has his awkward moments, but deep down, he just wants to belong. And as long as nobody calls him “Gene,” he’s happy to be the Turtle everyone knows and (sometimes) tolerates.
