Charmy’s Army – October 8, 2018

10OCTOBER2018_CHARMY - WEEK 41 - 1007-1013 - COLOR - STACKED - WEB

Every month, I draw at least one comic strip that takes as longs as the other 3 or four strips combined. This week’s comic strip was one of those massive undertakings. The comic strip may not appear to be all that complex, but the production of today’s comic strip was a long one. Scene two was drawn a few times, each time completely different as I sketched and sketched to achieve the right mood. I finally settled on the third, close up sketch because it better exhibited Warrior Wench Wendy’s courage after we last saw here looking defeated in panel one. The two panels each required two sides of opposing emotions from Frenchy as Warrior Wench Wendy in order to set up the gag. Yes, I overthink my work… but the results are worth my own inner struggles for perfection and success.

Pan over to scene three and I will let you in on a little secret. One of the ogres here will be a huge part of my upcoming Warrior Wench Wendy comic book. That is all I will say on that subject for now. Illustrating and coloring this scene took forever. I actually colored it four times until I was satisfied. I even used an anatomic drawing figure to get the ogres drawn correctly. I purchased a few of these figures you can pose off of an online ad a year ago. They work well. I have used them most recently for my last set of color comic book sketch covers. Even though the action figures are made for human proportions, the little reference guys are great for getting the poses just right on Charmy and Frenchy.

I am struggling with the Warrior Wench Wendy comic book currently. I want it to be edgy, yet I don’t want it to be so bad a kid cannot read it. The issue is the level of violence. I want the fight scenes to be realistic, yet the editor in my head is yelling at me to tone it down. Yes, I overthink the writing and directions as well. I have to in order to make the best product possible so a syndicate will finally look at me. 🙂

Okay, I gotta run, I need to work on new merchandise for Alamo City Comic Con. I am the hardest working cartoonist no one has ever heard of!!!!
